WE live in a small village near St Helens. BT broadband speeds are appalling and a little while ago BT effectively told my MP that without support from the public purse that we will never get fibre optic cable.

We had microwave broadband installed and now get 20mbs. The next day, I rang BT to cancel our broadband contract (30 days notice required).

I was told that we will automatically go on to a 12 month phone line contract (which we don’t want) and that we will have to pay £9.50 per month if we cancel before the end of this new 12 month contract period.

We are already contracted and have paid 12 months phone line rental in advance, which runs until January 27, 2018.

I accept that if we leave the phone line contract that we lose the remaining months pre-paid charges until the end of the contract.

I cannot accept that BT can force me to have a new phone contract when, in effect, I am giving them four months notice to quit.

I can end my phone line contract but that would stop my new broadband provider from porting across my landline number as BT says it will automatically block any porting across to a new provider.

BT says it is in my contract conditions but I cannot find it anywhere.
What’s more, they are dearer for their 0.5mbs than my new provider’s 20mbs. No contest.

I challenge BT to debate this in public.
