IN RESPONSE to last week’s letter about the legalisation of drugs.

Cannabis, especially the stronger stuff exacerbates mental health issues and, while it doesn’t always lead to heroin or harder drugs, every addict I know started on that stuff.

I have worked with them for the last 26 years or so, so have some small insight.

However, drugs will never be beaten.

The UK needs to have shooting galleries in every town for users to start with, instead of paying overseas foreign aid, pay the farmers to grown the drugs they grow anyway.

Import it, deal with it in a proper lab and then give it free to the addicts in a controlled environment as long as they stay out of trouble.

This would cut the dealers out of the system, there should be a drop in retail crime, which we all pay for in increased prices.

There would also be a drop in other acquisitive crime for the same reason, less money would be spent treating HIV and Hep infections as everything will be sterile and clean.

There will be far fewer overdoses and deaths, and, as each one of these costs many man hours and lots of cash to investigate, there would be a further positive knock on effect to the police and NHS.

Combine that with massive minimum sentences and asset stripping of anyone caught possessing and dealing and the UK would turn into a much nicer place.

It really needs a reasoned approach, simply banning has been proven to fail so surely proper management is key?
