I HAVE been a Rainford resident since 1968 so have the interests of this village and the community at my heart.

The young people of Rainford cannot afford to buy locally and I believe building affordable houses for them is admirable and a brave step by the St Helens Council.

It will also mean local house prices may come down and people will be able to get on with buying their own homes. A lot of people have moved to Rainford from Liverpool, St Helens etc to what were new builds in the 1950s and 1960s and thereafter.

I think it is hypocritical for campaigners to say “no new houses” when they moved to Rainford themselves, as Rainford was built up from a tiny village.

St Helens Council has been forward thinking and brave with its plans to make Rainford more affluent by providing jobs and housing for local people.

I hope people from outside Rainford are so impressed, they move here and bring their skills to this community and make it more vibrant.

Finally, I say to the opponents: your motivation for being against new builds is that you think your house price values will decrease, which does not cater for the overall good of the community and St Helens as a whole.
