AS one who voted to leave the EU, I resent misinformation posted by JF and True Brit (Star July 7).

The accusation that voting leave betrayed the fathers and grandfathers who fought in the world wars is total emotive nonsense. The peace in Europe has been kept by NATO which will resist any Russian aggression – imagined though it is.

I voted out because the EU I supported in 1975 has become an undemocratic bloated bureaucracy which inhibits free trade and represents only the interests of big business. As Steve Hilton, a former Tory strategist put it “a vile cesspit of corporate greed and corruption”. We are now free from that.

I voted out because I want to see a UK where we can plan a future for our children and grandchildren so that they have secure jobs, decent housing and the best of health care.

We cannot do that if we have uncontrolled immigration from inside or outside the EU. We now have the power to introduce a points system to admit immigrants whose skills we need.

I voted out because I believe in the sovereignty of all nations, free to make their own laws, elect their own lawmakers and remove them when they fail. We are now free to do that – try asking the Greek people if they wish that they had such freedom.

Democracy is the “control of an organisation or group by the majority of its members”, with the emphasis on majority. We voted to leave the EU by 52 to 48 per cent. That is the democratic decision of the UK. We are now free to negotiate trade agreements across the world, while the EU will continue to contract.

For the first time in years I feel a sense of freedom.
