ALL those people saying we should pay councillors the minimum wage, I agree.
It would be more than they currently get. Councillors don’t get an hourly rate, they get an allowance. Currently it stands at £7,626 a year. If you’re in the cabinet you get £15,246. My local councillors do a great job and they deserve to have their expenses covered.
If you don’t think they are worth what they are paid, challenge them, talk to them and ultimately you can vote for someone else if you’re still not satisfied.
The cuts we are facing in St Helens is a result of government cuts, not the local authority. And it might not be popular but much of our financial problems are due to a mix of poor decisions by the banking sector and the general population spending more than they had, maxing out credit cards and loans.
