THOSE of us ancients who lived through World War two remember well when the enemy was just across the Channel. And lo, 70 years on we again have an enemy at the gates, not bearing arms but invasive of our sovereignty and economic control.

A group of unelected Eurocrats in Brussels unable to balance their own books but with enough clout to issue directives we must obey. Now it's rubbish, we have to recycle 70 per cent and phase out landfill sites. Just what we need - more bins.

Apparently we have a good record for recycling in the capable hands of our local councils with minor grumbles, it works for us.

With MPs up in arms about this interference in our affairs, why don't we say "enough". What can they do? They need us more than we need them. Yet another bail out for the feckless Greeks showed the panic to keep up this facade of a united Europe.

If Greece left, other troubled nations might follow and choose to do it alone, even the UK. We are a proud island kingdom. Multicultural but with no desire to become just another federal state of Europe.

We elect our own rulers, not always wisely and seldom to our satisfaction, but they are ours and for all their faults are infinitely preferable to a bunch of bureaucrats in Brussels where the big boys France and Germany can call the tune.

Get us out pronto.
