I READ with interest a recent letter from a gentleman who was concerned by the large number of sparsely used buses running in the area.

I must say enjoy this facility while you can but spare a thought for those of us who live in the more rural parts of the district. We have had our service axed in the name of efficiency and cost cutting.

Our bus only ran every hour and a half six times a day with no service on Sunday or bank holidays. However with careful planning it was possible to remain independent and as many of us are pensioners it was a lifeline. Now we have to depend on the kindness of friends and relatives or the occasional taxi to get us out of the house.

So much for helping the elderly to remain independent in our own homes instead of becoming a burden on the country.

I would love to speak face to face with some of those people who sit on their cosy committees and wreak havoc with other people's lives in the name of efficiency.
