I WAS also surprised that the benches had been removed in the arcade, as were several others I spoke to.
I wonder who undertook the research and if St Helens shoppers were included.
Not everyone, myself included, are grateful for the extra space for "free unhindered circulation".
I prefer the benefit of being able to have a rest between shops on the benches, or 'park my bags' out to be more manageable or sit and wait for my friend to go to the shops when I've tired myself out.
It is not always appropriate to visit a cafe even if I wanted to. Without the benches, I think there are people, like me who fully appreciate the benefits of the benches, as medical conditions can limit the time one can spend walking around, and will refrain from coming into town.
This will be a shame as socialisation is all part of St Helens' community as is the friendliness of the people.
