AN ICE cream man has expressed his gratitude to the community after helping to raise funds for a cause close to his family’s heart.

John Watkinson, from Haydock, donated his sales from one day to the Breast Cancer Campaign after dressing all in pink as he travelled through the streets on his rounds.

John’s wife, Nan was 12 when she lost her grandmother to the illness, and her memories of her inspired him to hold the day during the autumn.

And he was delighted with the response that he received from people in Haydock, with more than £247 raised on the day and cancer patients visiting his van to share their personal accounts of fighting the disease.

“Myself and my wife were so touched by the love, support and caring nature of the Haydock and St Helens people,” said John.

“They are truly amazing.

“Several women came to the van on the Friday night with courageous and heartfelt stories of their battle with the disease, which really brought us to tears.

“We would also like to thank Stella ice creams in Knowsley for their kind donation of ice cream mix,” he added.
