I READ with interest the article in the Star dated August 21 about Bury Market and about our market in St Helens when it had outdoor stalls.

I left school when I was 15 to work for my Uncle Tom’s market gardening.

The year was 1950 and my Uncle Tom’s stall was by Paddy Marr’s, who sold fish. The next stall was the Gleaves family, who like my uncle sold plants in the spring and veg, tomatoes and flowers up to Christmas.

There were lots of other stalls on Friday and Saturday.

It would be nice to see the same type of market come back to St Helens along Church Street and say goodbye to the Continental Market.
