Good that council has entered 21st century with recycling, just a pity it was because they had to
We welcome the fact that St Helens Council has finally joined the 21st century with its new refuse and recycling services.
But it is clear from the shambolic roll out that our political leaders have joined the 21st century not because they wanted to, but because they had to.
Modern collection services have been in place up and down the country for many years, yet incredibly St Helens Council has managed to time these major changes to coincide with the six month closure of the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Ravenhead.
Just as recycling rates in St Helens should be increasing, they could well be coming down – at least in the short term.
Frontline and contact centre staff deserve a huge pat on the back for their efforts in recent weeks to make the best of the hand they’ve been dealt – and they should have been the ones to feature in the council’s St Helens First magazine, which instead features no fewer than seven photographs of council leader Barrie Grunewald.
Nevertheless, it is up to all of us to make this work, to reduce our waste and to recycle what we can’t reuse. We can’t afford not to.
