Fears for two men 'missing at sea'

A search has resumed amid fears that two men may be missing at sea after the body of another man was recovered.

An air and sea search was launched yesterday afternoon after a member of the public reported seeing a person in the water off the coast at Lowestoft, Suffolk.

After 25 minutes, crews found a man in the water. He was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts failed.

Teams recovered a pleasure boat which had capsized nearby, the Coastguard said.

Investigations are now under way to establish whether the man had been on board after reports of three people leaving nearby Gorleston in a boat.

The sea search was stood down at 12.40am this morning but a land search will be carried out this morning.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said: "Coastguard rescue teams from Lowestoft and Southwold will carry out a shoreline search this morning at low water. There are no plans to carry out a sea search."

Police are looking to trace the man's next of kin and determine whether he was on a boat that capsized or whether anyone else was on board.

A police spokesman said: "The police helicopter and an RAF search and rescue helicopter have been used to carry out searches of the water to assist the coastguard and see if anyone else could be spotted but there have been no further sightings."

Suffolk Police said the man who died was believed to be from the Great Yarmouth area.

It is thought the men were on a fishing trip.

A spokesman said: "Two men from the Great Yarmouth area have been reported as missing to Norfolk Police and inquiries are continuing to find them."
