THERE are few better places in the country than Barrows Farm to watch football when the sun is shining and Billinge and Altrincham Reserves served up a fine game for those there.

The Storks came away with a 2-1 victory but the scoreline doesn't reflect that the dominance of the home side.

Geoff Parr's boys were organised, kept the ball well, attacked with pace leaving Jamie Scott in goal with little to do.

The one thing that was mainly missing was some clinical finishing and it took until 40 minutes before Billinge were ahead.

Before that Callum Lees should have done better with a cross but failed to get his head on the ball while Ryan Platt maybe should have done better with a shot from range two minutes later.

A Chris Cottington free-kick sailed just over the bar on 35 minutes while Jamie Anderson hit a good long-range effort a minute later.

It was evident to those in attendance that a goal was just around the corner and what a goal it was. Steve Wolhuter - who was again outstanding in midfield - produced a wonderful long pass over the defence to Liam Bowden who lobbed the advancing keeper with consummate skill to make it one-nil to The Storks.

After the break Altrincham had their best ten minutes of the ninety as they took the game to Billinge and were rewarded on 50 minutes when The Claret & Blues defence failed to deal with a corner allowing an unmarked Alty player to make it 1-1.

You may have expected Altrincham to up their game at this point but Billinge kept their nerve and shape and again took the game to the visitors. Add in a couple of astute substitutions from the bench and The Storks were again back on top as with regards to possession.

Altrincham were - however - well organised and limited Billinge to long shots as Wolhuter and Cottington went close.

On 64 minutes Billinge got their breakthrough as a corner was only partly cleared, Anderson latched on to the ball and hit a creamer into the top corner from 20 yards.

Ten minutes later it was almost 3-1 as Bowden had a superb effort saved by the Altrincham keeper only to blast his follow-up against the post.

The final effort of the match came on 88 minutes when Steve Taylor had a fine effort saved and the game finished 2-1 to Billinge.

It was a good all-round performance by the team, bouncing back after the midweek injustices, and an excellent game to watch for the Billinge faithful.

Next Saturday League leaders Knutsford - who have won five out of five - visit Carr Mill Road for what should be a fantastic game.
