ST HELENS Town's homecoming match last night was abandoned in the closing stages.

Town hosted Abbey Hulton at their new Ruskin Drive home in what was their first game in St Helens for seven years.

But the match at the St Helens Council-owned facility had to be abandoned at a crucial stage due to the floodlights going off.

The score was 0-0 in the last minute when Abbey Hulton were awarded a penalty in the second Hallmark Security League Division One game of the new season.

But at 10.01pm the floodlights, on an automatic setting, went out before the spot kick was taken.

The match was due to kick off at 7.45pm but was delayed 26 minutes due to the Abbey Hey team's arrival being delayed by last night's M6 closures, which resulted in the later finish than had been expected.
