PRESCOT Cables produced a five-star performance with this emphatic victory against fellow relegation strugglers Ossett Albion at Volair Park.

Cables Manager Brian Richardson made four changes from the team which had lost 3-1 at Glossop North End the previous week. Joe Herbert, James Doyle, Andy Scarisbrick and Lloyd Dean replacing Danny Flood, Ben Cartwright, Sam Turner and Harry Cain.

Before the game there was a minute’s applause in memory of Dennis Bellairs, a great supporter and long serving committee member of Prescot Cables and Graham Taylor former England Manager was also remembered.

Ossett kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End.

Cables applied the early pressure and Edgar played a fine ball to put Jordan Wynne clear but he was ruled offside. Herbert then broke down the right side for Cables playing the ball to Lloyd Dean who squared the ball across goal for Dominic Marie who fired over the bar.

However, it didn’t take Cables long to break the deadlock and they opened the scoring on 6 minutes.

James Edgar received the ball from Jordan Wynne and he delivered a perfect cross to the far post where Chris Almond was waiting to score from close range.

Ossett forced two corners in quick succession, Will Wells heading over the bar from the second one. Cables were awarded a free kick just outside their penalty area when Tom Guest brought down James Edgar.

Cables keeper Marcus Burgess took the free kick hitting it long and finding Lloyd Dean who advanced into the Ossett penalty area firing the ball across goal but no Cables player was able to get a touch on it and the ball went out for a throw in.

Another long ball by Joe Herbert again found Dean who played the ball into Dominic Marie who was unable to control it and the Ossett defence cleared.

Ossett were awarded two free kicks but wasted these opportunities by over hitting them, the first went straight through to Cables keeper Marcus Burgess and the second sailed out of play for a goal kick to Cables.

Ossett then nearly caught Cables unawares when Isaac Baldwin’s cross from the left dipped sharply and clipped the Cables cross bar.

Tom Guest then went on a long weaving run taking him through the Cables defence into the penalty area, culminating in a shot which drifted wide of the far post.

Ossett were now starting to assert pressure on the Cables defence as half time approached and a shot by James Eyles flashed just wide of the far post. Jackson Hassanyeh then set up an opportunity for James Eyles whose shot was saved by Marcus Burgess.

After surviving this spell of pressure from Ossett, Cables turned the game on its head with three goals in five minutes just before half time.

On 40 minutes Lloyd Dean passed inside to Dominic Marie on the left who advanced into the penalty area and fired home inside the far post to put Cables 2-0 ahead.

One minute later and it was 3-0. A long ball from Jordan Wynne was fumbled by Ossett keeper Brett Souter on the edge of the penalty area, and Chris Almond gratefully stroked the ball into an empty net. Not content with this, Cables added a fourth goal on the stroke of half time.

Jordan Wynne freed Chris Almond on the left who crossed to the far post for Dominic Marie who produced a fine finish to make it 4-0.

Cables began the second half in positive fashion, Lloyd Dean cutting through the middle of the Ossett defence but he was denied by a fine tackle by Elliot Harrison on the edge of the penalty area.

Ossett then had an opportunity to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a free kick in a central position outside the Cables penalty area.

Rob Boardman took the free kick firing over the Cables wall, his shot striking the Cables cross bar and rebounding clear.

Ossett left back Isaac Baldwin broke down the left side crossing across the face of the Cables goal but James Doyle hacked the ball clear for Cables. Baldwin was proving a threat down the left side for Ossett and he advanced into the Cables penalty area only for Chris Almond to block his cross and concede a corner. James Eyles then cut inside from the right, his shot being blocked by Joe Herbert.

Ossett certainly hadn’t given up hope and Tom Guest went on a fine run through the middle only to be tackled on the edge of the penalty area by Cables skipper James McCulloch.

On 60 minutes Cables made their first change, Harry Caine replacing Chris Almond.

Caine was soon in action advancing into the penalty area but he lost possession as he tried to lay the ball off and Ossett’s defence cleared the danger. Cables were awarded a free kick in a central position outside the Ossett penalty area.

Dominic Marie took the free kick, his first attempt hitting the Ossett wall and his second attempt was wide.

On 63 minutes Ossett made their first change, Ben Walker replacing Jackson Hassenyeh.

Cables were awarded a free kick when James McCulloch was brought down by Adam Muller who was shown a yellow card by the referee.

Boardman and Eyles then linked up for Ossett, Eyle’s shot being saved comfortably by Burgess. On 71 minutes Cables made their second change, Dale Wright replacing Jordan Wynne who had had an outstanding game. Wright’s impact was immediate as his intelligent passing created opportunities for his team mates.

Marie’s shot from close range was saved by Ossett keeper Souter and Scarisbrick also had a shot saved as Cables looked to add to their goals tally.

On 74 minutes Ossett made their second change, Steve Nicholson replacing Elliot Harrison and Cables made their final change shortly afterwards when Dominic Reid replaced Dominic Marie.

Harry Caine was keen to get his name on the score sheet, his first attempt was saved by Souter and his second attempt he fired wide.

Cables were now dominating possession in the closing stages of the game and Brett Souter had to make a spectacular save to deny Valter Hernandes, flicking the ball over the bar for a corner.

From the corner taken by James Edgar, James McCulloch headed just wide of the far post.

Dominic Reid had a shot saved by Souter before Cables finally got their fifth goal in the 86th minute, Dale Wright's superb pass through the Ossett defence sending Dominic Reid clear who confidently stroked the ball past Souter.

It was a fitting finale to a great performance by Cables.
