PRESCOT Cables recorded their first league victory in 12 games beating Tadcaster Albion 1-0 in an error strewn game at Volair Park in which both teams struggled to pass the ball accurately on a heavy pitch and bitterly cold conditions.

The heavily sanded and uneven surface made it difficult for both sides to play an attractive open game and it was very much a dog fight as both teams scrapped for possession in the early stages.

Adam Baker received a stern talking to from the referee when he made a late challenge on Cables skipper Jamie McCulloch just outside the Cables penalty area.

The free kick taken by Cables keeper Phil Priestley sailed right through to his opposite number Gary Stevens who collected the ball gratefully.

After an uninspiring first half, Cables got off to a flying start to the second half with a goal inside 20 seconds.

From the kick off the ball was played towards the Tadcaster penalty area and there appeared to be no danger as Tadcaster centre back Andy Milne shielded the ball back to Gary Stevens in goal.

However the ball bounced awkwardly away from Stevens who had come out of his goal and dropped invitingly for Dominic Marie who chipped the ball into the far corner of the net to put Cables one up.

After this early set back, Tadcaster pressed forward in search of an equaliser but failed to create any clear cut scoring opportunities.

Cables had a chance to clinch the game on 75 minutes when James Edgar sent Dominic Marie clear but Stevens produced a fine save to deny him.

Tadcaster had not thrown the towel in and forced a corner on 82 minutes from which Sellars had a shot blocked then Thirkell fired over the bar from long range. Baker was spoken to again by the referee for another late challenge on McCulloch as tempers began to fray.

There were three minutes of added time for Cables to endure and there was an anxious moment right at the death when the ball fell invitingly for Adam Baker in a crowded penalty area who fired wide of the far post much to the relief of the Cables players as the referee blew the final whistle.
