ST Helens Town turned in another fine display of attacking football against Daisy Hill on Saturday to earn a Quarter-Final home draw against league newcomers City of Liverpool FC in the Reusch First Division Cup, a game due to be played on Saturday 3rd December.

However, with Prescot Cables due to play at home that day against Scarborough Athletic, the game would have to be played on the Friday or the Sunday if a switch to COLFC’s base at Bootle FC is to be avoided.

Saturday’s game began where the previous week’s performance at Eccleshall left off, with Town very much on top against a strangely subdued Daisy Hill side and, once again, the opposing goalkeeper, Craig Haynes, was to be man of the match, producing a string of breath-taking saves.

Luke Edwards went close in the early exchanges, then Dale Korie-Butler wove his way through the Daisy Hill defence from 40 yards out, only to be thwarted by Haynes who anticipated his final shot.

Danny Greene made a break down the right and found Andy Gillespie, whose snapshot looked goalbound, but Haynes tipped it just round his right-hand post but a minute later, Haynes was stranded as Korie-Butler could only pull his effort across the face of the unguarded net.

With half an hour on the clock, Greene was narrowly wide with a fine drive and Gillespie twice tested Haynes again before Korie-Butler’s curling shot was tipped around the post by Haynes to rescue the visitors yet again.

The inevitable happened in the 41st minute. Greene found Gillespie with an inch-perfect corner and Town’s captain headed precisely into the roof of the net, giving Haynes no chance. Just before the interval, Edwards hit a tremendous dipping shot which beat the Daisy Hill keeper in the air, but clattered the cross-bar from 20 yards out.

The second half started in the same, unrelenting fashion and, within nine minutes, Gillespie was upended in the penalty area by a clumsy challenge and Korie-Butler despatched the penalty kick with some force.

To all intents and purposes, the 2-0 scoreline was always going to be too much for Daisy Hill to surmount, but Town were happy to relax a little, but still keep a close eye on the midfield situation in particular, especially given this season’s record of losing matches from winning positions.

On this occasion, though, they needed have no such worries and they cruised into the last eight.

Town are in action again on Thursday at Prescot at 7.45pm, when they take on Cheadle Town in a Hallmark Security First Division game, looking to make amends for letting slip a three-goal lead on 90 minutes, only to end up with a 3-3 draw back in August.

Last season’s home game ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw, so it might be well-worth defying the cold evening air for a good night of football.

Saturday sees St Helens make the trip over the Pennines to take on Silsden after an absence of over twelve months. It was a last minute goal from the West Yorkshire outfit that relegated Town in April 2015, but Silsden themselves made the drop at the end of last season and this is the first meeting between the sides since.

On Wednesday next, Town make the short hop to Litherland REMYCA in the First Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup, having already won there in a league match at the end of August.
