PRESCOT Cables and Clitheroe shared the points in an ill tempered game at Hope Street in which five players received yellow cards

Cables Manager Andy Paxton made three changes from the team which had lost at Lancaster last week, Jonah O’Reilly, Joe Nicholson and Rob Doran replacing George Mannion, Joe J Evans and Joseph Evans.

Cables kicked off playing towards the Knowsley End but it was Clitheroe who applied the early pressure, Sefton Gonzales breaking through the Cables defence from deep but he was eventually outnumbered by the Cables defenders.

Cables were awarded a free kick after a foul by Bakkor on James Edgar.

Rob Doran took the free kick from which Joe Nicholson had a shot which was blocked.

Clitheroe were soon on the attack again, and Marcus Burgess pushed a shot from David Lynch away for a corner.

Lynch took the corner himself which was cleared as far as James Walker who crossed for Gonzales whose header was flicked over by Burgess for another corner.

The corner taken by Lynch to the far post was headed back by Danny Brady bit Burgess was there again to save. Lynch was soon threatening again moving into the Cables penalty area, Joe Herbert making a fine tackle to clear the danger.

Cables were awarded a free kick when Gonzales was caught off side which Burgess took from which another free kick was awarded for pushing by a Clitheroe defender. Doran took the free kick aiming the ball towards the far post but the referee blew for a free kick to Clitheroe as McCulloch was adjudged to have held down a Clitheroe defender.

On 20 minutes Rob Doran dribbled through the Clitheroe defence into the penalty area but his shot went out of play. Cables had an appeal for a penalty turned down when McCulloch went down inside the box.

However they won a free kick outside the penalty area when Dent fouled McCulloch and was lucky not to receive a yellow card.

Doran took the free kick to the far post but Woodhead held it firmly under pressure.

Clitheroe responded to this spell of pressure by Cables and were awarded a free kick on the right taken by Mayer which was headed over at the far post by Brady.

Bakkor then went close for Clitheroe with a shot just over the bar. Bakkor then found himself in the referees note book when he was shown a yellow card for a challenge on McCulloch after 32 minutes.

The free kick taken by Burgess was headed on by O’Reilly for Doran but was too long and went out of play. On 35 minutes Brandon Barski became the second player to receive a yellow card for a foul on Rob Doran. Clitheroe made their first change when Michael Hampson replaced Scott Bakkor.

On 42 minutes Cables were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Clitheroe penalty area for a foul on Lloyd Dean.

Doran took the free kick aiming it into the centre of the box, Dean heading over the bar.

Clitheroe resorted to the direct approach just before the break with a long clearance from Woodhead dropping nicely into the path of Sefton Gonzales whose shot was pushed away by Burgess for a corner.

The corner was cleared by the Cables defence as the first half ended scoreless.

Cables began the second half eager to break the dead lock.

Joe Nicholson came close to putting Cables ahead with rasping drive from which Woodhead made a fine save.

Clitheroe almost caught Cables out with a long ball over the top from Barski for Harris but Jamie McCulloch came to the rescue with a fine tackle.

As play switched from one end to the other, Joe Nicholson played the ball through for Rob Doran whose first shot was saved by Woodhead, but he was first to the rebound and chipped it over Woodhead into the empty net to put Cables one up on 52 minutes. The pace was now frantic, and Gonzales had a shot blocked for Clitheroe.

The referee spoke to Walker and Doran after a skirmish in the middle of the pitch as tempers began to fray.

Phil Bannister played a fine ball to Lloyd Dean whose shot was saved by Woodhead.

Some fine defending by Cables kept Sefton Gonzales at bay after he was put through by Dent.

Another long ball put Gonzales through on goal but Burgess saved at his feet, Gonzales following through and being shown a yellow card for a late challenge. Clitheroe made two changes on 72 minutes, Bonaminio and Cattermole replacing Brady and Walker as Clitheroe threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser.

Their endeavour was rewarded on 74 minutes when after a neat one – two between Lynch and Gonzales, Gonzales slotted the ball past Burgess to make it 1-1.

They nearly caught Cables out again straight from the restart, Gonzales playing Lynch in whose shot was cleared off the goal line by Shinks.

Cables made their first change on 76 minutes, Connor Grainger replacing Phil Bannister. Rob Doran made a fine run from deep for Cables his shot being pushed away by Woodhead for a corner.

Doran then played a fine cross field ball for Grainger who hit the ball just past the far post.

Clitheroe responded with a fast counter attack down the left, Mayer crossing for Gonzales whose bullet header produced a fine save form Burgess.

Cables made a second change on 89 minutes, Lewis Coyle replacing Jonah O’Reilly.

Coyle received a yellow card for coming on to the pitch before getting permission from the linesman.

He became the second Cables player to be booked, Doran having been booked earlier.

In added time, Cables had one last chance to win the game, Doran, Grainger and McCulloch linking up down the left to find Lloyd Dean who shot wide of the target.
