ST HELENS Town have a tough hurdle on Saturday when they entertain Tadcaster Albion in the FA Vase third round – but victory would open up so many doors in the last 32.

The winners could be drawn against a club from anywhere in England, a Wembley date in May awaiting the eventual finalists, so there is everything to play for.

Their Yorkshire opponents are leaders of the Northern Counties East Premier Division and include former Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion star Jonathan Greening in their ranks and they are amongst the favourites for the competition, but with home advantage Town will be looking to spring an upset.

Town chairman John McKiernan said: “The FA Vase holds great memories for the club and it’s a while since we progressed through the qualifying rounds and reached the last 64 of the competition.

“It’s a great opportunity for the St Helens public to get behind us as Tadcaster will no doubt have a significant travelling support from North Yorkshire.

“We’ve been given a tough draw against the current leaders of the Northern Counties East League, but we will hopefully make home advantage pay. “Like all good cup runs we’ve got to beat the best sides if we are to get anywhere near a Wembley return.”

Town famously won the FA Vase after beating Warrington Town beneath the old Wembley twin towers back in 1987.

“The FA Vase success team may be a distant memory but a return to Wembley is something the club always dreams of and the competition is something that always catches the interest of local supporters.

“The lads have put in some great performances in the four opening rounds, no more than their battling win at Alnwick Town.

“Financially the FA Vase run has been a real bonus for the club and with £1,500 on offer for Saturday’s winners there’s further chance to boost the club coffers,” said McKiernan.

A big crowd is expected at Brocstedes Park, so supporters are advised to get there early.
