Prescot Cables defeated Burscough comfortably at Hope Street. However Burscough will rue missing several good scoring opportunities in what for the most part was an even contest.

Manager Dave Powell made three changes from the side which had won at Wakefield the previous week. Haynes, Pouncey and McGann replacing Cairns, Gianotta and Doran.

Burscough kicked off playing towards the Knowsley end. After gaining possession from the kick off Cables played a long ball forward for Chris McGann which Duff cleared. Burscough responded with Pelger crossing from the right for Brookfield whose first time shot was deflected for a corner. From the corner taken by James Short which literally was a short corner Jordan Williams shot wide from the edge of the box.

It was an end to end game played at relentless pace, and another long ball over the top from Cables found Isaac Kusolaka who lobbed the ball over the keeper from the edge of the box only to see his shot drift agonisingly wide of the far post and still remain in play and Max Pouncey following up hit the ball over the bar from an acute angle.

Burscough left back Short then played a long ball over the Cables defence for Williams but it was Cables keeper Richie Mottram who was first to the ball. More good play from Burscough between Connolly, Williams and Laird saw Laird head wide of the post.

Francis Foy continued to pose a threat for Cables down the left and his cross to the near post was headed on by Kusaloka and punched clear by Burscough keeper Horn. On 19 minutes Cables took the lead when Foy played the ball into the box for Kusaloka who turned sharply and fired hard and low past Horn into the net.

On 21 minutes Burscough were almost gifted an equaliser when Craig Haynes was caught in possession by Jordan Williams but Richie Mottram came to the rescue pushing William’s shot away for a corner.

Burscough pushed forward in search of an equaliser and Duff crossed long into the box for Brown who headed across goal but Mottram held well. Phil Bannister looking to exploit Kusaloka’s pace played another long ball forward but Horn racing out of his goal cleared the ball into touch.

Cables had another opportunity before the break when Shinks played the ball forward to McGann who played in Kusaloka whose shot was blocked by the Burscough defence Cables began the second half on the offensive Kenendy and Kualoka linking down the right, Kusaloka hitting the ball across the face of the goal and out of play. Kusaloka then played the ball inside to Phil Bannister who dragged his shot wide of the target.

Max Pouncy then played a ball in for Isaac Kusaloka to chase but he was just beaten to it by the keeper. Burscough had two good opportunities to level the score firstly when Brown shot high and wide from in front of goal then Mottram saved Jordan William’s shot.

Cables made their first change on 55 minutes, Luke Balaz replacing Nathan Parish. Burscough continued to press fro an equaliser and Connolly had a shot blocked for a corner from which Williams headed on for Short who headed over at the far post. Cables made their second substitution on the hour Rob Doran replacing Chris McGann.

Burscough then squandered another opportunity on 64 minutes when Short crossed into the box for the unmarked Jordan Williams who shot straight at Mottram. Cables made Burscough pay dearly for that miss when Kusaloka scored his second goal on 66 minutes. Burscough keeper Tim Horn hit an attempted clearance straight at Kusaloka who gathered the rebound before rounding Horn and slotting the ball into the empty net.

One minute later and Cables nearly added a third goal, Pouncy’s shot being saved by Horn for a corner.

Cables made their third and final change on 78 minutes Luke Robinson replacing Isaac Kusaloka. Cables went in search of a third goal to put the icing on the cake and from a corner taken by Rob Doran, Craig Haynes turned sharply and fired a shot towards goal only for Camozzi to clear at the foot of the post. On 85 minutes Luke Robinson had a shot saved at the second attempt by Horn.

On 88 minutes Cables score their third goal when Doran crossed low into the box for Pouncy whose shot was waved by Horn only for Luke Robinson to follow up and score from the rebound.
