SAINTS’ new signing Alex Walmsley is in the running for the Championship Young Player of the Year Award.

The 21-year-old, 6ft5 Batley front rower is in the running with Leigh’s Ryan Brierley and Featherstone’s Greg Worthington.

The Star exclusively revealed last Thursday that the young Bulldog had signed a three-year deal.

Having seen off the bids of rival Yorkshire clubs, club chairman Eamonn McManus is excited by the capture.

He said: “Alex is one of the most promising and exciting prospects in the game and we are delighted to have secured his services ahead of stiff competition from other clubs.

“He is a powerful forward who we have no doubt will suit Saints style of play. We look forward to welcoming him into the club.”
