Amor's 54th-minute score went a long way towards curtailing a fightback from the Azzuri at Barlow Park in Cairns during Ireland's opening Rugby League World Cup 2017 game.

The try, converted by Liam Finn, moved the Wolfhounds 26-12 in front en route to a 36-12 victory for Mark Aston's side.

Fellow Saints forward Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook scored Ireland's last try in the 79th minute.

In the second game of the double-header, thigs did not go so well for the Saints' Luke Douglas and his Scotland teammates as they fell 50-4 to a Tonga side packed with NRL talent and rated as the tournament's darkhorses.

And St Helens half-back Theo Fages was skipper of the French side that fell 29-18 to Lebanon in the opening weekend's final game Down Under.
