EXCITING half back Danny Richardson has been rewarded for a strong showing in his break-out season by earning a contract extension at Saints that will take him to the end of 2020.

The 21-year-old Widnesian, who has grabbed his chance to impress at number seven in Super League this term, has the option of a further year in the red vee after that.

It has been a big season for Richardson, who made his senior bow against Leeds earlier this year after Matty Smith broke his leg in the opening day friendly.

Although he subsequently dropped back out of what was generally a struggling side, further injury to Smith later in the campaign allowed Richardson to really stake his claim under Justin Holbrook.

Richardson took his chance well, with his varied passing and kicking game and some sharp, probing thrusts in taking on the line making him a handful for the opposition.

That firmly established him as a fans favourite.

He played 12 games last term, including the crucial matches that saw Saints secure a berth in the Super League semi-final, scoring two tries and chipping over a drop goal in the process.

Despite his relative youth, Richardson clearly displays the confident traits and swagger of a good number seven - with the skills to back them up - and his displays gave coach Justin Holbrook a genuine selection headache at the back end of the campaign.

Although Saints opted for the big game experience of Smith for the semi-final, even bigger things are expected of Richardson going forward.

Holbrook said: "Danny has had a good year with the club and I am pleased he has agreed a new contract.

"He took his opportunity with both hands after impressing at both Academy and Reserve level.

"We are looking forward to seeing him improve over the next few years as he has a big future in the game."

The former Halton Hornets player joined the Saints system as a 16-year-old and kicked the golden point penalty against Wigan in the 2016 Academy Championship Grand Final.

Richardson said: "It is an honour to sign a new contract with the club I call home.

"I'm looking forward to developing as a player and winning silverware with the Saints.

"Since making my debut the coaching staff, players and fans have been very supportive and I cannot wait to repay them for their faith."
