SAINTS' golden point Super League semi-final knockout at Castleford was a real heartbreaker.

The fans packed behind the goal had, moments earlier, been dreaming of a Ben Barba inspired Saints strutting their stuff at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ryan Morgan had capped a comeback after Saints had rallied from 20-10 to lead by two points.

But with three minutes to play, it began to unravel with Mark Percival's fourth missed conversion, a failure to gather the ball from the restart and a lare penalty slotted by Luke Gale allowing Cas to equalise.

Gale and Matty Smith both missed golden point winners, before the Cas man nailed it to break Saints' hearts.

But where does that fit on a scale of other Saints heartbreakers.

Here are a few from the last 40 years....

1. Saints v Leeds, Wembley 1978. Saints see a 10-0 lead overhauled by Leeds, who nudge a head courtesy of drop goals from John Holmes and David Ward.

But in one last throw of the dice Saint throw the ball right but centre Derek Noonan just can't hold Peter Glynn's pass yards from the line and the hooter sounds befor the scrum is formed.

2. Saints v Featherstone, Challenge Cup 1983. Saints had been without a cup for an age but looked on the march after a fine win at Leeds. But they fell to minnows Featherstone after a late Jon Gilbert try. Rovers went on to shock everyone by winning the cup, but that did not soften the blow.

3. Saints v Wigan, Challenge Cup 1984. In front of a 20,000 crowd, Saints had held a narrow lead on a quagmire of a pitch before a piece of tactical naivety saw Wigan go the length of the field late in the game for the match winner.

4. Saints v Halifax, Wembley 1987. Hot Favourites to beat the previous year's champions, Saints lost to a John Pendlebuy drop goal. But it was Pendlebury's tackle to dislodge the ball from Mark Elia's grasp that won it.

5. Saints v Wigan, Challenge Cup semi final 1990. Saints had thrown absolutely everything at the team that had humilated them at Wembley the year before. Alas Hanley and Goodway cooked up a late match-winner from a forward pass to scupper Saints' hopes.

6. Saints v Leeds, Grand Final 2011. Saints had played every game away from home, but looked like they were going to pull off the most remarkable of successes when they lead Leeds on the hour mark. But a daft penalty, followed by an injury to Michael Shenton, on top of an earlier one to Paul Wellens, saw the game unravel.
