ONE of the stand out performers in the Saints pack this past eight weeks has been young prop Luke Thompson.

The former Pilkington Recs and Bold junior, who won a Grand Final ring as a young gun in 2014, has brought toughness, energy and consistency to the Saints middle.

And he was once again among the pick of Saints pack in the late win against Salford on Friday.

He is enjoying the season, despite it being something of a rollercoaster, but maintains there is still plenty to fight for yet in this campaign.

Thompson said: “It has been an up and down season, but we can take each week as it comes and keep fighting hard for the two points every week and then we have a good chance of the top four.”

That starts at Leeds tomorrow night - as tough a place as any to try and get a first away win in England since September.

Thompson was relishing it, and has good memories of the place.

“Headingley is always a great place to go. It was where I played my third first team game for Saints.

“The crowd is always noisy and electric and it always makes for a good game,” he said.

Although they are five points adrift of top four, Thompson says they will battle on.

“Every week is going to be tough now. It is like a cup final every week and we need to be on the money to give ourselves a shot,” he said.

He was buoyed by the dramatic finish to last Friday's game, and was pleased with the spirit shown to stick in together.

"At 24-8 down could have put our heads down but we stuck in there and we fought deep and it was a credit to us.

"I could hear the Salford fans singing about our fans leaving. But Robes got over for the first one and then that was it," he said.

Coach Justin Holbrook has been impressed with the young packman since he arrived at the club.

"I have been really happy with Luke – every game since I have been here, we need him to keep going like that because he has helped us to get back on track after our start.

"But we need him to keep going well," Holbrook said.
