SEAN Long was looking forward to getting the team out on the training field this week this week to work on Saints’ attack.

With the three-man interim coaching team taking over during the notoriously busy Easter week time on the training paddock has been limited.

And changes and refinement that needs to be made, particularly in the light of a disappointing showing with the ball at Widnes, can only be done out on the grass.

Long said: “We were not clinical enough with the ball – we lacked a bit of detail and did not run the right lines - but we can address that.

“We have not been out on the training field - one session in two weeks, but now we have got a chance to get out there and put it into practice.”

Saints’ attack will also benefit once they get to play more than one game with a settled 1, 6, 7, 9 spine of Jonny Lomax, Theo Fages, Matty Smith and James Roby.

Long continued: “It does hurt you - missing Jonny and then Tommy Mak, who has been outstanding there at full back, too.

“We get Tommy back this week, Theo and Matty are finding a combination and we have just got to keep running our plays consistently well and adding little details.

“If we can get out on the field, rather than just showing them in the video room, it will be better.

“Now Easter is done we can get two good sessions out of them this week.

“And then put that in practice on Friday against Leigh.”

Despite a playing record of just four wins and a draw from 11 matches, Long is confident that the team can still climb the table and challenge.

He said: “If we can put four or five wins together we can shoot up the ladder because everyone is taking points off each other.

“There is loads of rugby left - four good wins and then the lads start building in confidence.

“We start getting Robes and Jonny back and slotting them in, we then pick up a bit of form and start enjoying the way we are attacking.

“That is the main thing.

“We had got plenty of confidence over Easter and the crowd had really helped, getting behind the boys.

“Hopefully we can do that and that last Friday was just a blip.”

Roby and Lomax will not face Leigh but could come back the following week against Warrington.

Long continued: “No disrespect to Leigh but the focus this week is on ourselves.

“We have played them once, we know what they are all about and they have already beaten us. This week the focus is purely on ourselves and getting our attack right.”
