SCRUM half Matty Smith was delighted to make a telling contribution to Saints’ home win over Warrington – but vowed there is still work to do.

Playing his first Super League game since returning to his hometown club from Wigan, Smith’s control and kicking game ensured Saints played the Wolves in the right part of the pitch.

Although happy with the win, and the confidence that has sent coursing through the camp after a rocky start to the campaign, Smith said there would be no resting on laurels.

And with the points still needed to climb the Super League table - and a tough game at high-flying Salford tonight – there was no time to give themselves too big a pat on the back.

Smith said: “The win the week before in Catalans gave us the confidence and helped the squad.

“The effort was there in France and again last week against Warrington it was fantastic.

“There are things we need to work on, both sides of the ball in D and attack.

“And we know we have a tough game on Thursday.”

The Red Devils are currently a place above Saints on the table and have already beaten high-flying Castleford this term.

And a look down their roster reveals why.

Smith, who used to play at Salford before his move to Wigan, understands the challenge the Saints face.

“If you look at players Salford have got, Todd Carney, Robert Lui, and Michael Dobson in the halves alone – they are good players.

“Ben Murdoch-Masila is going well and carries the ball strong and they have some really strong strike players.

“They are attacking the ball really well.

“Our focus this week has got to be our defence – so we have to be physical with their middles and just defend as a team.

“If we defend well we invariably attack well too.”

Salford have a strong back five, with former Saints loanee Gareth O’Brien linking up well from full back and Justin Carney being a ball-carrying beat on the flanks.

Smith added: “Carney and Johnson really get them on the front foot, but we have got a dangerous back five, too.”

Saints suffered a real hiding at the AJ Bell Stadium last season - and they know what to expect.

“We are not underestimating anyone, we did video for two hours this morning to try and work out how we beat Salford.

“We are doing everything we can – it is up to the players to go out and do the business.

“We need to carry on working hard and not give ourselves too much of a pat on the back.”

The win over Wolves has given them a spur.

“It was always going to be a tough start because they needed the win, but we weathered that storm pretty well.

“We need to keep winning and keep the points ticking over.

“Although it is early on and you are not going to be the finished article – those games count if you want to finish in the top four.

“It is important we knock off a few wins now.

“It is important that we keep getting better now, we have players in the right position now, we will hopefully have a full strength squad within the next couple of weeks with Jonny Lomax coming back and Luke Thompson near enough fit.

“We are in a good place but we need to keep improving and training and put that on the field.”
