IN the off season to mark the coming of age of Super League we asked our readers to vote for their best Saints XIII of the summer era.

Although silverware has been a bit thin of late, Saints’ record over the 21 seasons is still remarkable.

They won the inaugural title in the double winning first season of 1996 – their first cup and title for 20 seasons.

The trophies have come in regularly with Saints winning the Super League Grand Finals in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2014.

And added to that they backed up 96 with Challenge Cup wins in 1997, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

To achieve that Saints had players of rare quality, flair, power, pace and skill.

We have compiled the team our readers have voted on, position by position, and written about the 13 individuals in a 16-page special supplement in this week's St Helens Star.

But over the next fortninght we will publish that team, day by day.

Tomorrow it is full back, with readers voting overwhelmingly for Paul Wellens.

And at the end of it we will ask you to vote for the captain and coach of the fictitious selection.
