AFTER a bitterly disappointing defeat at Leigh, Saints will be looking to get back on track when they tackle a Wakefield side that has narrowly lost their two openers.

Wakefield were edged out by Hull on the opening weekend and then let the game against Huddersfield slip away after leading.

Saints boss Keiron Cunningham singled out former Canberra Raiders scrum half Sam Williams as a key addition to the side that has recruited well - and managed to retain players like Tom Johnstone and Jacob Miller.

Cunningham said: “Wakefield are a good side, they have recruited well this year.

“I have watched both of their games so far, and in the Hull game they were really unlucky and you can say similar after the Huddersfield game.

“Chris Chester has recruited well – he has a good half back in Williams and some good middles who just keep coming at you.”

Wakefield have a long tradition of beating Saints when not expected to - and defeated the teams of Ian Millward and Daniel Anderson in the noughties.

But after years of simply clinging on Wakefield shocked plenty last term to finish in the top eight.

That, plus some shrewd recruitment, makes this an even more dangerous game for a Saints side that can ill afford any further slip ups.

Cunningham said: “The comp is a lot tighter and more even than it used to be. We need to get out of the 2006 mentality.

“This is a different era and a tough old slog every week.

“The funding from TV money enables everyone to spend cap. Years ago some of us would spend £1.8m and Wakefield might have spent £1m, so you afford to pinch players from those clubs.

“Ches is a good coach, a good recruiter and he is building something good there.”
