NEW Saints prop Luke Douglas believes he can help steer fellow Scottish international Adam Walker on the right track after seeing what the ex-Hull KR man delivered during the Four Nations campaign.

The pair earned their spurs against New Zealand’s seasoned NRL pair Jesse Bromwich and Adam Blair and helped pave the way for a historic draw.

The next time the duo will run out together they will be wearing the red vee of Saints in a beefed up front row that looks altogether more solid than later term’s foursome.

And the 30-year-old former Gold Coast Titans and Cronulla Sharks prop has seen plenty in rough diamond Walker, who brings solid contact and an offload game to the table, and would like to help him develop.

Douglas said: “Adam is a bit rough around the edges but hopefully I can get him on the straight and narrow; eating the right food and training hard.

“I will be into him because he has so much potential, he’s a great player and I’ll look to push him in the right direction.”

The pair will combine with last year’s stand out players Kyle Amor and Alex Walmsley, supported by Luke Thompson in the middle, to provide Saints with an effective front row unit.

Douglas, who has signed a three year deal at Langtree Park, dropped in at the club after Scotland’s final Continued on page 99 game of the Four Nations tournament in Workington.

As an experienced, NRL-battle hardened player Douglas already knows what his role will be on and off the field.

And he once again adds to the maturity of a playing group that lost a little – not simply on the playing front - with the departures of the likes of old heads Paul Wellens, Willie Manu, Sia Soliola, Lance Hohaia and Anthony Laffranchi around 2014/15.

In that sense Douglas will have a twin role in the squad – and is already relishing both aspects of that.

“I watched a few of the St Helens games from last year and they have a couple of great front rowers in Alex Walmsley and Kyle Amor.

“Hopefully we can contribute positively to that pack and have a good season,” he said.

“I hope I can pass on some of my experience. I heard that the juniors went through the year undefeated and a few of those guys are going up into the first team squad and training with the big boys.

“Hopefully I can contribute a little bit as I try to pride myself on doing all the right things and ticking all the boxes to get ready for the game.”

Douglas has been to the club for a medical and to see the staff and some of the players, but will now have an off season.

He will return to St Helens at the end of December with his wife, two-month old son and mother-in-law following him over a week later.

“I thought I would have to do a little stint before Christmas but Keiron said all the rep players are coming back four days before Christmas but told me to go home and come back on January 2,” he said.
