SAINTS boss Keiron Cunningham will survey the landscape around him before deciding what the best way to go is during the last two weeks of the season.

With top four pretty secure, barring three Saints losses and a similar amount of Catalans wins, Cunningham said his team is looking up rather than down.

Although there is a temptation to ease off and give other players game-time ahead of the semi-finals, Cunningham has not given up on climbing a couple of steps up the ladder.

Cunningham said: “I will have to see what the rest of the comp is doing around us before I make any decisions what we do (in the last two matches).

“It is not just about securing fourth, I think we did that a few weeks ago, but if we can give ourselves a better shot at things we will keep on fighting hard.

“Teams have got to play each other and so that means second place is up for grabs.

“It only takes one of them to stumble and anything is attainable.”

Saints are bolstered this week by the return of the two Lukes, Thompson and Walsh, who are back after serving two-match bans.

“It does pose a selection conundrum. Tommo will be the easy one because we are light in that department so he comes straight back in.

“Luke Walsh not played for two weeks, whereas Theo Fages had not played for nine

“But the Walsh, JT, Jonny Lomax, Jon Wilkin, James Roby combination was one of the best spines in the comp last month.

“It is tough but I think you should always go for experience and Walsh and JT have got a fair few more games.

“That is where I am sort of heading.”

The absence of Walsh has put a bit of speed bump in the way of Saints’ attack that was ticking over nicely last month.

The Aussie linchpin's return will hopefully fix that.

Cunningham added: “The Wigan game hit us with a bang, defensively we tried but things didn’t work with the ball, sometimes that is rugby is rugby.

“It was a good kick up the backside for us and and back end of the Hull game we showed we were over it.

“In training Walsh jumped in earlier this week and things flowed a little bit better.

“I am sure will be better on Thursday.

“There is belief here. They are a good group of players.

“90 per cent is mental. Hull were losing games at the start of the year, but all they have got is a bit of confidence.

“They are top of the league and have won the cup.

“If you look at where we are at defensively – we could not tackle a hot dinner at the start of the year.

“It is just confidence that breeds that will and that want, and the urgency. Determination in our defence got us through against Hull.”
