SAINTS boss Keiron Cunningham has tipped young forward Morgan Knowles as a possible future captain of the club.

The 19-year-old Barrovian, who burst into the first team this season, has signed a new three-year deal with the club.

The former Blackbrook Junior has enjoyed a real breakthrough campaign, featuring 18 times so far, crossing for three tries and keeping out more experienced players.

Cunningham has been watching Knowles’ development for four years and sees massive potential.

Cunningham said: “I’ve followed him since he was 15, because he has played in my son's team.

“The kid lives in Barrow so every game he decided to travel down three times a week to come and play at Blackbrook to better his career.

“He has gone through Saints system and knew as soon as I set eyes on him he was a special player.

“The more I see him, the more he convinces me.

“He has still got lots of developing and learning to do, but the sky is the limit for him.

“That is my job – I have got to make sure we educate him right and keep him fit and not overplay him, but it’s hard not to pick him at the minute.

“He will probably end up as an 80 minute number 13 who can kick the ball and organise the team and you are probably looking at a future captain of the club.

Signed from Barrow Island, he has been at the club since the age of 15 and has already made his debut for Wales.

“I’m really happy to stay at the club for the next three years,” he said.

“I have good mentors at the Saints not only in the coaching staff but amongst the players too.

“Keiron Cunningham has put his confidence in me and I have played a few games as a result this season.

“I spent my academy career travelling to St Helens from Cumbria each week to train and play; but all players make sacrifices to play and become a professional.

“I want to now establish myself as a regular first team player and continue to work hard and learn from those around me.”
