FRENCH half back Theo Fages could be ready to renew his working relationship with former mentor Sean Long at Saints.

The talented 21-year-old scrum half, who can also dip in at number nine, resigned from Salford Red Devils in August but has finally secured his departure today.

He has been released from the last year of his contract at the AJ Bell Stadium after Salford were paid an undisclosed transfer fee.

Although Saints have remained tight-lipped all the way through the player’s dispute with the Red Devils, that has not stopped Long’s protégé being strongly linked with the club.

The move would fit, not simply because of former Salford assistant coach Long’s admiration for the skills and attributes of the Frenchman, who has been at the Red Devils since he was 16.

All year Saints have been short of cover at half back, requiring back row Jon Wilkin to put in a sterling shift at seven when Luke Walsh has been absent.

And Keiron Cunningham only this week, when discussing James Roby’s 62 tackles, suggested his 80 minute hooker could not go on forever playing this role without breaking himself.

If Fages were to sign, it could be that he could float between both roles with a view to taking the seven spot if Walsh decides to return home when the third year of his contract expires next term.

Quality, and available, halves are as rare as hen's teeth so Fages will be in demand.

In a statement issued through his Cheshire-based management company, Taylor Made Sports Management Limited, Fages said: "Today Salford Red Devils and I have reached an agreement that will see the club receive an undisclosed transfer fee as compensation for the final year of my contract.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters who have given me many happy memories and for their support over the last four years.

“Also to my team-mates who I have played with and who have helped me develop into the player that I am today.

"I would also like to thank Salford Red Devils for their support and development of me as a player and I will always have a fond memory in my heart and I wish them all the very best for the future."

Given today’s announcement, it seems highly likely that Fages’ destination will be revealed by the end of the week.
