TOMMY Makinson makes a welcome return to the Saints squad after a 10-week absence with a broken leg.

The young flier was arguably the form wingman of the competition and knocking on the door of England selection until his break against Salford in early June.

Saints boss Keiron Cunningham has been pleased with Makinson’s progress, and should training go well this week he will slot back in against Huddersfield Giants.

He is one of a couple of potential changes that will freshen up the team following Friday’s bad home loss to Hull FC.

Prop Kyle Amor, who was omitted from the last match, is back in contention and Jordan Turner may again be given extra minutes as he continues to adapt to his new midfield role.

In skipper Jon Wilkin’s absence, Cunningham is looking at an extra pivot to support the halves and James Roby.

And he believes the role will not only boost the team, but help Turner rebuild his confidence ahead of a return into the centres.

Cunningham: “JT played some really good rugby in that middle area towards the push to the Grand Final last year.

“Defensively he is not at the best confidence of his life, in the middle you have got a lot of other people around you so if you miss a tackle it is not as important because you have people cleaning up for you.

“He is a really good ball player and I thought he would add something into that middle.

“I only gave him a short spell there at the weekend but as soon as he came on he looked good. Going forward, at least for next couple of weeks.”

There are positive, as well as negative reasons behind the switch.

Cunningham added: “He is big, 100 odd kilos and carries the ball hard and has a lovely passing game and can kick so can gives me four points of kicks.

“Going forward it may be good for him and us and once he gets his confidence back we can maybe look at moving back to centres.

“The position he would be playing would be an old school 13 like Shane Cooper, very similar to the job Joe Westerman or Sean O’Loughhlin does now with a bit of ball playing.

“JT is big and physical and has that nice passing game as well – so it is an idea I have been having.

“I spoke to him at the start of the season and when you do get bigger it is a natural progression.

“It may be something going forward he may relish.

Amor is in with a chance a return after benefitting from the week off.

“He has responded really well. Missing a game has done him good.

“He is champing at the bit so hopefully give us something when he comes back in,” Cunningham said.

“If you look how played at start of the year he was outstanding, the same player we knew.

“Sometimes a week away is as good as trying to do something different.”
