HOOKER James Roby certainly knows what it means to enjoy success in the Challenge Cup.

Having been a part of Saints’ three consecutive cup triumphs during the past decade, the competition has provided some of the most memorable highlights of his career, not least scoring the first Challenge Cup try at the new Wembley stadium back in 2007.

Tonight’s clash with Leeds is their 14th cup semi-final in the summer era but their first in four years, with Saints not having played under the Wembley arch since 2008.

And for Roby it would mean everything to make a return to the national stadium, this time as one of the cup veterans in the side.

“Seven years has been a bit too long to be honest,” he said.

“We all want to get there, the spectators want to get there and everyone in the town wants to get there and hopefully on Friday night we can do everything right and reward all the fans and get us back to Wembley.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be in sides that have experienced Wembley and winning Challenge Cup finals and how special it is.

“I’d like to share that with a lot of the lads here who haven’t experienced it.”

Roby was rested by Keiron Cunningham for the league rout against Hull KR, but shone the previous week at the Halliwell Jones against Warrington.

And the England international believes the team’s positive form will stand them in good stead ahead of the clash.

“Last week was a great game for us. Obviously I didn’t play but it was a good team performance and we’re always better going into a big game on the back of a win,” added Roby.

“It’s one we will definitely take confidence from but this is a semi-final. It’s a whole different kind of ball game and one we’re really looking forward to.

“Every game against Leeds is always a big game. They have beaten us the last couple of times and quite convincingly.

“But you can’t really take the past into account. It’s a brand new game, a different competition and there’s a lot at stake. We want to get it right on the night.”
