SAINTS’ flying wingers Adam Swift and Tommy Makinson bagged seven tries between them on Friday night – and earned the plaudits of the head coach Keiron Cunningham
Although Cunningham has expressed a wish to beef up his complement of outside backs, that won’t be at the expense of either of his two first choice wings.
After being critical of some aspects of their play at the start of the campaign, the Saints boss was keen to give them credit for their displays of recent weeks.
Cunningham said: “Adam Swift’s speed and his footwork help him out. You can afford to be a bit lighter if you have got the speed.
“Everyone does not have to be 100 odd kilos to play on the wing. That is a myth– it is what you make of it.
“We get paid as coaches to make what we have got work and that is what we we are doing.
“It would be nice to have a big ‘play-two’ winger, but I would not want to change that for what I currently have.
“Both wingers are in really good form and I would not want to upset that balance.
“We need to strengthen the depth of that outside back department – and that is something I will be looking to do – but it won’t be someone ahead of those two.
“The back three, including Shannon McDonnell, are playing well.”
