SAINTS will throw in a couple of new faces when they tackle League 1 minnows York City Knights in round six of the Challenge Cup at Langtree Park on Friday.

Morgan Knowles, 18, and 19-year-old England Academy back row Oliver Davies are included in the squad for the clash – but Keiron Cunningham said there will not be wholesale changes.

Although Saints will be overwhelming favourites to comfortably ease past the Knights, Cunningham wants his players to use this game as a stepping stone back to consistent performances.

Cunningham said: “This game is about us at this period of time. We need to get back into some good form consistently.

“We are hitting good form in patches but we have to put in a full 80-minute performance.

“There will definitely be two juniors in there making their debut.

“There are kids there who I want to have a look at and this gives me the opportunity to see them play with some senior players.

“There won’t be as many rested as people think because there are certain individuals who need to start finding a bit of form.

“This week is just about us. We won’t be doing any video on York, it will be everything about us, our defensive structures and the way we attack.”

Under the new format, a Saints victory on Friday will see them two – admittedly difficult – wins from Wembley. Sounds easy, but the revamped competition structure means two tough games.

Cunningham believes the changed format will make it tougher for all teams to get past the next two stages.

“The lower leagues teams will probably go out this round and then it is straight into Super League teams and it will be a tough competition.

“We were due a good draw and would like to think we can get the job done and cross our fingers for a decent quarter final.”

Youngsters like stand off Danny Richardson, centre Jack Ashworth and hooker Lewis Charnock are also selected in the 19-man.

Some players – like Alex Walmsley – have earned a rest, while other firsat teamers are picked to try and build some form back.
