LANCE Hohaia has retired from rugby league due to recurrent "concussion-type" symptoms since returning to play this year.

News of the Saints player's decision to hang up his boots with immediate effect emerged earlier today and tonight Hohaia revealed he was quitting for health reasons.

In a statement reported by the BBC he said: "I have been experiencing recurrent post match concussion-type symptoms since returning to play.

"I am seeking medical advice to understand any potential effects to my long-term health."

Hohaia was knocked out in the opening minutes of last October's Grand Final win over Wigan after being punched twice by Wigan's Ben Flower.

The New Zealand World Cup winner was midway through the final year of a four-year deal at Langtree Park.

He has played eight games this season - at full back, half back and hooker - but been injured for the past two games.

The club said: "Lance has been a valued and integral member of the squad for the last three-and-a-half years and we thank him for his service.

"We wish him and his family well in their life after rugby league with St Helens.

"St Helens will make no further comment on this matter."
