SAINTS' unbeaten record came to a halt in disappointing fashion against Wigan at a sold-out Langtree Park, losing 33-14.

It started badly for Saints when Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook continued the unfortunate recent trend of dropping the ball from the kick off and a fired up Wigan were always going to make them pay - and they did.

Saints had too many players off key and it did not help that the Warriors benefited from every bounce of the ball.

After Wigan had taken the lead with their first attack, Saints soon hit back when Jonny Lomax made a fine break down the left, slipping a tackle before sending Tommy Makinson in at the corner for another smartly taken try.

Saints should have had another when Lomax made another fine break but could not get it to the supporting Matty Dawson.

Dawson crossed moments later but that was chalked off by the video ref for obstruction.

And so it was Wigan who hit the front again when Dan Sarginson collected a long pass to score in the corner.

Matty Smith added a second goal to make it 12-6 and Wigan were on a roll.

And the visitors cashed in on their good fortune when Joe Burgess caught Blake Green's kick, tossed it back inside for Liam Farrell to see off a couple of tackles en route to the line.

Saints desperately needed a foothold and got it off the back of a penalty when a long ball got Makinson in at the corner for his second.

A break from Josh Jones should have been more profitable, but later in the set Jordan Turner went in but had the ball ripped in a two on one.

However, justice was done when from the penalty Turner collected Hohaia's pass.

Saints were back in it, but were unlucky to concede a penalty just as the hooter sounded, with Smith making it 20-14 at the break.

Unfortunately a jammy Farrell try, when he took a rebound off a kick to Lomax's body left Saints chasing the game.

It was clear that the Houdini trick would not work four weeks in a row.

A long range Burgess try confirmed that with a Smith drop goal adding the final point of the game.

It concluded a bitterly disappointing end to Saints' winning start to the season and coach Nathan Brown could not hide his displeasure at some of his players' performances afterwards, saying that they could not carry too many below par performances.
