HE is already regarded as a modern day Saints great, an inspirational captain and for more than a decade a fearless last line of defence.
And tonight, Paul Wellens, the man they call Mr St Helens because of his affinity and loyalty to his home town, is expected to break the Super League appearance record.
Against Castleford, the 34-year-old will should surpass Keith Senior tally of games.
It will be his 414th Super League game for Saints at Castleford. For a player who has never shied away from putting his body on the line it will represent a remarkable achievement of longevity.
The former De La Salle pupil made his Saints debut in 1998 and has so winners’ medals for five Challenge Cups, four Grand Finals and two World Club Challenges.
Individually, has also won the Lance Todd Trophy twice, the Man of Steel, and Harry Sunderland awards.
