Saints secure home draw with 38-12 win
SAINTS banked a home draw in the play-offs with an emphatic win on Humberside.
Although it was a gutsy team effort, there were particular highlights produced by dazzling young wingman Adam Swift, who grabbed two cracking tries.
Saints led 22-0 at the break, and although Hull got a toe-hold back in the game just after the break there was no way the men in the red vee were letting it slip.
All the first half points came in the second quarter – and there have been some cracking tries among them.
Jon Wilkin started the ball rolling on 26 minutes when his kick ricocheted kindly, enabling Francis Meli to pick up off his bootstraps before feeding Wilkin the scoring pass on the inside.
And although a magnificent tackle-breaking zig-zagging run from Adam Swift was just stopped inches short of the line, that only delayed an inevitable score by two tackles, with ever present Josh Jones powering over.
Undeterred, the alert Swift was back for more and he sped 50 metres for solo score after a breakdown at a Hull scrum.
And then in one last attack after the hooter had sounded, Saints’ Willie Manu stole the ball one-on-one to romp over against his former club.
Jonny Lomax kicked three first half goals to give Saints a comfortable lead at the break.
A restart on the full gave Hull first crack at the Saints line straight away – and they took it with Richard Whiting crossing for a score converted by Danny Tickle.
Saints kept their cool, and from a 40/20 kick Saints had the perfect platform for Francis Meli to slide over.
Although Hull had a good period of pressure from penalties and drop outs, Saints held firm.
And turning defence into attack they countered magnificently, with a superb effort. Twice Lomax kicked, regathering before placing a perfect kick wide for Swift to attack. The young wingman finished off so well that even the partisan Hull fans applauded.
Tickle powered over from close range, and booted the goal himself from out wide, but it was a mere consolation.
Saints had the last word when following a great break from Wilkin, the ball was moved right for Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook to power over.
Jordan Turner added the goal from in front of the posts.
