Nathan Brown still learning about players' capabilities

SAINTS boss Nathan Brown admits he is still learning about the qualities and capabilities of his team in the heat of the battle.

He was speaking after seeing his team’s record stand at one win, one loss and one draw after the opening three games.

Although defensively Saints were excellent on Friday – and for large parts they dominated – it was nevertheless frustrating to see a point go begging.

Maybe that is behind what could be a suggested change of heart in where and how he plays some players.

Brown said: “The effort is good but we need to do some things consistently better.

“From a coaching point of view I have picked up some things that I may have thought are now not quite right for this group of personnel so we have to do things a little bit different.

“That’s a part of learning about your personnel.

“St Helens are really good when they are on the front foot – and there were times on Friday when we were on top.

“But we are trying to get some things in place for when the scores are very tight and we are trying to grind out wins.

“We can’t score our way out of trouble – sometimes you have to try and get that kick in the corner and build some momentum again. They are the things we are learning.”

Big Alex Walmsley made an energetic first team debut, with the crowd roaring him on to the ball when he carried it into the thick of the Hull defence.

Although nerves and fatigue contributed to two unforced knock ons at the play the ball, that should not detract from what was an otherwise positive first Super League hit-out.

Brown said: “Big Alex’s contribution was good.

“The excitement and sitting on the bench there would have chewed up some nervous energy but he is doing really well and everyone is happy with him.

“As he plays he will improve with experience.

“He played against some good players too – Andy Lynch and Mark O’Meley are no shrinking violets.

“They are decent players to be up against for an opening game. He carried the ball strongly and we saw enough in him to know he is going to be a valuable member of our squad.

“We thought it would have taken him longer to advance – but he has put hard work in and is getting his rewards.”
