Another close encounter by two well matched teams saw the home side again take maximum points, snatching the result at the last play of the game with a neatly taken drop goal from fly half Liam Hill.

Prior to the start both teams provided a minutes silence in memory of Mick Gilman, a long serving player , Colts coach, joint founder of the successful Mini/Junior section, and erstwhile Club steward, who passed away a couple of days earlier.

After only five minutes Park’s pack won good possession through a number of phases, and drove over the line for Rob Morley to touch down for a try which was converted by Warren Hunt.

The visitors struck back however with a try of their own from centre Haworth, finishing off a move by the three-quarters then adding the conversion by fly half Dearnley to level the scores.

With good possession supplied by a much improved pack Park added a further try as Hill dummied his way over the line to register an excellent score, added to by Hunt with another conversion.

The see-saw game saw the score levelled again, and after an excellent defensive stint from the home side, another Glossop forward drive breached the home defence bringing a converted try for the visitors .

West Park regained the lead after an imaginative chip over the visitors defence by a fast improving centre Savage was expertly collected by Liam Hill , he fed wing Warren Hunt who hit the line at speed to score a try which he was not however able to convert. Glossop again levelled the score with a three-quarter move , adding a try to tie the game at half time at 19 pts apiece.

The second half was played in difficult conditions as driving rain did little to help running rugby, nor indeed did the dismissal of flanker Dyson for unnecessary retaliation after a high tackle on a Park player. Circumstances conspired to help the visitors to take the lead for the first time in the game, with first a penalty kick then added to by a push over try from close range by second row Wilkinson, which was not converted.

Despite being a man down Park took the game to the visitors, and from a scrum awarded after the Glossop full back had been forced to touch down behind his own line, the ball was passed along the line for centre Kal Warburton to score a try which Hunt converted with great skill given the conditions and associated pressures. The visitors also had a man dismissed and with equality restored the last few minutes saw Park’s pressure eventually pay off with Hill’s timely drop goal, ensuring maximum points.

Next week Park travel to Hoylake who are slightly higher in the league and thus will prove worthy opposition.

Warrington 2nd XV 67 West Park 2nd XV 6 Warrington proved far too strong for the visitors, although as half time approached they only led by 5pts. The home side adapted better to the dreadful playing conditions and the second half proved to be one way traffic with a somewhat depleted visitors side much the second best.

Next week Park will look to getting back to winning ways when they entertain Glossop 2nd at Red Rocks.

West Park 3rd XV 46 Widnes 3rd XV 10 West Park Phoenix side continued it’s strong start to the season with an emphatic win over a resilient Widnes side. The atrocious conditions did little to dampen the side’s enthusiasm and commitment, and unlike last season they are proving to be no pushovers, a strength they aim to again demonstrate next week at Birkenhead Park.
