DESPITE a lacklustre display from both sides West Park salvaged the points with literally the last kick of the game, beating Eccles 25-23.

Stand off and man of the match Lee Rosney converted a penalty to give the Red Rocks side a narrow win.

The game was less than five minutes old when Park got the opening score with prop Kurt Riley making good ground on the short side before feeding second row Lewis Harris who beat a couple of defenders to score a try wide out.

Eccles were punished on several occasions for technical infringements, with flanker James eventually being sent to the sin bin.

Despite their superior numbers and often poor decision making, the home side could not press home their numerical advantage, and indeed it was the visitors who took the lead as a series of missed tackles allowed centre Waring to weave his way to the line for a try which lively stand off George Oakey converted.

Another sin binning again reduced Eccles to 14 men, and this time Park took full advantage of their extra man.

A good passing movement by Park’s backs saw a powerful burst by winger Josh Ainsworth halted just short of the line but was continued on by centre Danny Green to register another try which Rosney duly converted.

A successful penalty by each side saw Park leading 15-10 at half time.

Oakey converted another penalty for Eccles early into the second half to narrow the gap, but Park increased their lead after a slick passing movement was finished off to give Lewis Harris his second try, Rosney converting to add the extras.

Once again the home side seemed to lack conviction in their own abilities, and the energy to further their advantage, and it was the visitors excellent stand off Oakey who triggered the next score, slicing through a static defence at speed and although held just short of the line was able to offload to a supporting player for a try which he himself converted, leaving themselves only two points adrift.

Oakey converted a penalty to give Eccles a one point lead to sting Park into action.

Continuing indiscretions by the visitors saw them punished again with a yellow card, and seconds later Park were awarded another penalty which Rosney coolly converted to seal the win.

West Park travel to Rochdale on Saturday.
