LIVERPOOL St Helens put last week’s narrow defeat behind them with a thirty point victory over Liverpool Collegiate in South Lancashire/Cheshire One.

Although not indicated by the score-line, they were however, made to work extremely hard for the win, finding themselves defending in their own half for much of the game.

Right from the start the Aigburth outfit had the majority of possession and bossed the territory but as one of the more astute members of the Moss Lane Faithful observed: “It’s not how much ball you get but it’s what you do with it when you get it.”

LSH found themselves defending wave after wave of Collegiate forwards but defended strongly and resolutely, ultimately holding up their opponents over the try line on five occasions.

Winger Jake Hodson scored a hat-trick of tries, all from within his own half and all a bit special.

New centre Jordan Case marked his debut with a well taken try; Dan Filson, once again frequently joining in from full back, finished off the move of the match to notch his try and tight head prop Mark Fryer franked his afternoon’s effective performance with a try from close range.

The pattern was set in the first ten minutes when for eight or nine of them Collegiate attacked in the LSH half, got close to the LSH line and then when the ball was turned over Hodson outpaced everyone down the right wing over 80 metres to score, converted by Filson.

Ten minutes later the LSH pack drove up towards the opposition try-line and when the ball came back, Jordan Case darted over to score, Filson converting.

Collegiate landed a penalty in the 23rd minute before Hodson scored the second of his tries eight minutes later.

This time the speedster cut inside from his own half and sped around three defenders to score under the posts, Filson converting.

Just before half time after a fine break from Dan Webster the LSH backs delivered an excellent try with quick movement from Johnston, Rawsthorne and Case passing to Filson racing up to score neatly in the right hand corner to make it 26-3 at the break.

The visitors' efforts were rewarded in the 47th minute when their scrum half burrowed over to score as the game followed a similar pattern to the first half.

LSH always looked like adding to their tally and did so through Fryer in the 53rd minute, converted by Filson and Hodson for his hat-trick in the 72nd minute Filson again converting.

The score came from a superb break by flanker James Burrows, passing to Hodson who engaged a different gear to once again score under the posts.
