RUSKIN Park made the trip across town to take on Newton-Le-Willows on Saturday.

Looking to maintain their 100 per cent record this season, Ruskin were able to field a strong team and the crowd were expectant following last week’s 99 point haul.

From the kick-off, the Newton pack put Ruskin under real pressure, forcing errors and turning over ball.

However, it was Ruskin who crossed the line first following some fine support play with Neale Foster crossing in the corner.

This was quickly followed by a period of pressure from Ruskin culminating in Shaun Tress driving over from short range, Alex Stuart converted to push the score onto 12-0.

Newton Le Willows looked to be containing Ruskin with a good period of possession, and after sustained pressure on Ruskin’s line the Newton pack were rewarded with a try from a well-executed rolling maul.

Unfortunately, Newton were unable to push on following their try, indeed, Ruskin appeared determined to increase their advantage with a passage of excellent back play, masterfully orchestrated by Sam Hughes at 10. Mike Farrelly and Neil Foster crossing in a matter of minutes with Stuart converting, 26-5

Following a period of scrappy play, Ruskin cleared their lines with a deep kick into the Newton half, the ball was fumbled and it was left to the Stuart brothers Ashley and Alex to compete for the loose ball, it was Ashley Stuart who eased Alex out of the way to swoop down and race to the line.

Again Newton dug deep and forced the Ruskin defensive line back into their own half, after some excellent and determined play the well-drilled Newton pack once again forced their way over the line from close range.

However, it was left to Danny Davies to score an excellent solo effort to complete the first half scoring for Ruskin, Stuart converting to make it 38-12 at the break.

With the introduction of Karl Jones, the second half was all Ruskin, with Jones needing just 4 minutes to get the scoreboard moving after finishing another fine passage of play from the Ruskin back-line. Stuart converted and soon after added a penalty, 48-12.

Ruskin began to throw the ball around with great flair and skill, and were rewarded with a second try for Mike Farrelly, and a well finished effort from Matt Bartlett.

Stuart adding a conversion, 60-12.

The fitness of the Ruskin pack began to tell as the second half progressed and it was Shaun Tress backing up, after some fine work from Paul Owen and Adam Fogarty, who crossed the line for his second of the day.

Not to be outdone, when the ball was moved wide to Jones on the wing late in the second half, he showed a tremendous turn of pace and outsprinted the covering Newton defence to cross the line in the corner for his second of the day, Stuart converted to finish the scoring with Ruskin running out 72-12 victors.

Credit must be given to Newton Le Willows who never gave up throughout the match, disrupting Ruskin’s line-outs and turning over good ball in the loose.

Ruskin will look to stay top of the league next week, as they welcome Oldershaw to Ruskin Drive, 3pm kick off.
