A dominant performance by West Park to open the season, with their pack setting a platform for a comprehensive win, with 7 tries earning them maximum league points.

The home side’s tackling, especially in a close first half, was key to their eventual success with the back row of Paddy Loughnane, Matt Potter and man of the match Matt Couzens always to the fore.

Park’s first score took less than 10 mins from then start of the game, with Green’s quick tap and break from the 22 enabling a supporting Couzens to cross for a try , that score added to shortly afterwards with a successful penalty attempt from Warren Hunt.

Wigan got back into the game with a penalty try correctly awarded for obstruction, leaving only a single point between the teams, the deadlock being eventually broken between two well matched teams as another quick tap penalty was taken on by Couzens finding winger Hunt with a long pass, who then glided past the visitor’s full back to score an excellent try wide out, bring the score to 13 pts to 7 pts at half time.

The 2nd half proved to be a much more one-sided affair, with scrum half Danny Green providing an efficient and highly effective link between forwards and backs. Further well crafted tries followed from prop Martin Kimberley, winger Josh Ainsworth and two from hooker Tom Williams, the score climbing to 41pts to 7pts as Warren Hunt provided conversions for all four tries.

Though well outplayed, to their credit Wigan continued to compete, and quick inter- passing along their back line allowed winger Connell to squeeze in at the corner.

West Park however had the last say as a good break by full back Matt Savage found centre Liam Hill in support, who unselfishly found centre Kal Warburton linking at pace to score the final try , which once again Hunt converted.

This was an excellent all round performance by Park which will hopefully be repeated next week when travelling to play Winnington Park.
