LIVERPOOL St Helens produced a blistering display to dispose of rivals Bowdon 67-10 to make it a perfect ten out of ten in their current South Lancashire/Cheshire One campaign.

A complete team performance brilliantly orchestrated by half backs Rob Dyer and Greg Smith gave the Moss Lane faithful a real treat of an afternoon as LSH ran in four first-half tries to secure the bonus point then added six more in the second half.

Forced to make a few positional changes when Sean Casey pulled up sharply in the warm up resulting in Mark Devine on the wing – LSH were far from hampered when in the fifth minute they took an early lead with a neat try involving Greg Smith, Ian Stanley, Matt Cunliffe and John Pape before Jake Hodson scored in the left hand corner, converted by Smith.

Three minutes later Pape delivered a superb reverse pass to provide Smith with a walk-in try. Bowden however had not come to Moss Lane for nothing and for the next twenty minutes gave as good as they’ve got, winning plenty of possession with their sizeable pack and putting the LSH line under severe pressure.

Jonathan Thomas slotted a drop goal after fifteen minutes and, shortly after a Matt Cunliffe penalty, Bowdon’s pressure brought a converted try for the visitors to make it 15-10.

LSH replied in the best possible way with two tries in the five minutes before the break through Hodson, scrambling over at the second attempt and Stanley running one in from distance after good support from Mark Potter.

Smith converted both to send LSH into the break with a 29-10 lead. The next forty minutes was as good as has been seen at Moss Lane this season.

The standard was set three minutes after the restart when big Joe Bate burst through a gap in the Bowdon defence to gallop 30 yards and run round behind the posts before touching down, Smith converting.

Five minutes later Matt Cunliffe claimed a one-yard plunge after strong pressure on the Bowdon line, converted by Smith followed immediately by a fine individual effort from Smith which he then converted for a 50-10 lead. Skipper Phil Kearns got on the score sheet in the fifty-eighth minute when the line-out which had worked well all afternoon produced good ball for him to run through the Bowdon defence to touch down.

Jake Hodson then notched his hat-trick and his 11th try of the season when scoring after good work from Cunliffe and Pape, converted by Smith.

A period of relative calm ensued until the final minute when the mercurial Smith, not to be outdone, ran over 60 yards to claim his own hat-trick of tries and equal Hodson’s tally of 11 tries.

This Saturday LSH travel to Anselmians.
