LIVERPOOL St Helens won this much awaited derby of the 15-a-side kind with a power-packed performance, registering three tries in each half in a 43-7 success.

A hardworking and cohesive pack, with the front row of John Windle, Chris Houlton and Mark Fryer outstanding, laid the foundation for the win which sees the Moss Laners move into second place in South Lancashire/Cheshire One.

A lively opening with both sides anxious to make their mark ended up with LSH’s Greg Smith slotting a penalty in the 11th minute.

This was followed four minutes later by a fine try from full back Ian Stanley, he sprinted home from 30 yards after combining well with winger Jake Hodson, a combination which was to bring LSH success all afternoon.

LSH continued to dominate possession and after good work from second rower Joe Bate in pressuring the West Park line, fly half Rob Dyer took a quick tap penalty which flew along pairs of hands to Stanley who crossed for the second try, converted by Smith to make it 15-0 after 25 minutes.

West Park responded with their best period of the game during which LSH were reduced to 14 men.

The visitors came close on a number of occasions as the half drew to a close but sadly for them, and much to LSH’s credit and strong defence, their efforts came to nought.

LSH emerged from this period further in front when Smith and Stanley combined to release Hodson to score, converted by Smith for a 22-0 score at half time.

In the second half, Park again responded and 12 minutes after the break they ran in a try from distance and then finished off under the posts. This stung LSH back into action and a pushover try finished off in typical fashion by Phil Kearns brought the try bonus point on the hour mark. This was followed by a penalty try following a similar manoeuvre, again converted by Smith.

As the game drifted towards its close there was time for a further LSH try scored in the last minute by Matt Cunliffe courtesy of a 90 yard interception. The centre ended proceedings by converting his own try to round off a satisfying win.
