On a calm if rather cool day, this match produced some excellent rugby, particularly from the home side, with some 10 tries scored overall, but remarkably not one converted by either side.

Hoylake’s pack showed a little too much power for the home side to handle early on, and a neat pick up from the base of a 5 metre scrum by scrum half Guy Byatt gave them an early lead.

West Park however settled quickly into the game , and after a fine cross field move started by skipper Morley and carried on by Savage and Hill, winger Chris Fortune scored in the corner for what was to be a personal hat trick of tries.

Some fine interplay particularly within the back division soon saw Fortune cross for a further score, followed in short order by yet another try, as Fortune once again received the ball wide out and his inside pass to fellow winger Warren Hunt was neatly converted into points.

Hoylake were proving a handful in the set scrums, and despite some excellent defending, particularly by Park’s back row of Lewis Whitty, man of the match Patrick Loughnane and Karl Millar, a catch and drive from a 10 metres out saw the visitors register a second try.

As half time approached, centre Kal Warburton seized on a loose pass by the Hoylake backs, and intelligent running saw him link up with fellow centre Jon James, who fed winger Fortune to enable him to register his hat trick and West Park’s fourth try, leaving the half time score at 20pts to 10pts.

The home side’s forwards stuck admirably to their task, and as the game progressed and the visitors tired, showed excellent handling and recycling skills, and a clever pass from evergreen prop forward Mike Simpson allowed winger Hunt to comprehensively beat his opposite number and score in the corner.

West Park were full of running and a high kick was well fielded by Warburton whose neat pass found Hunt on hand to complete his hat trick and the home side’s sixth and final try.

Though beaten in most departments Hoylake battled to the end, and plays close to Park’s line brought them two late tries from rolling mauls, which saw them pick up an unlikely bonus point having achieved a fourth try.

Next week West Park travel to Glossop for what will undoubtedly prove another stern test.
